My intention behind this work was to create something new and
unique while portraying a message. The message I wanted to portray
is regarding balance.
Composition
I decided to add the connecting “spikes” to portray the balance message.
It worked well because if you have too much of something in one of the
mugs and too little in the other the balance is off. You have to find the
right balance to make it work.
I used color and especially shape to create these mugs. The shape makes
these mugs unique. I used contrast between the two mugs to show they are
opposites but opposites attract.
Process and Problem Solving
I used the coil method to create everything on the mugs but the
“spikes”. The “spikes” were created using the slab method. I had
to make the spikes fit together because if they aren’t precise they
don’t hold together correctly. I also had to try and make two mug
shapes identical to each other.
Discovery
I realized while creating the mugs that I had to find balance in
the creation of the work itself, the perfect width of the spikes
and not too long that they are easily broken.
My World View??
I believe that everyuthing in life requires balance. The right balance
can get you very far in what you are trying to achieve, whereas the
wrong balance can completely ruin that. If you try to relate balance
to aspects of your everyday life you will realize that it connects
to everything that you do and have done.
