Excessive Instagram Use in College Students Leading to Depression
THE PROBLEM
Instagram has over 2 billion active users monthly, because it is so easily accessible. The largest percentage of users are between the ages of 18-24, the same average age range of college students. The main issue posed with Instagram, is the overuse of the platform. The algorithm is designed to keep users engaged, leading to hours of aimless scrolling and decreased productivity.
THE ARGUMENT
The overuse of instagram has a direct link in the development of mental health issues, like depression and anxiety, amongst college students. There is constant comparison of media portrayals to the self-image of college students, leading to negative feelings like jealousy and inadequacy, therefore opening the window to these mental health issues.
